Alvin Lucier is a well-known composer of music and sound installations that explore natural phenomena and resonance.

This is the text specifying directions for performing the piece:
"The horizontal line represents the sustained sound made by the idling engine of an Aston Martin DB2/4 Mark III 2.9 liter sedan, or equivalent.
The notations above and below the horizontal line are to be interpreted and performed by depressing and releasing the accelerator of the motor car with the right foot.
Space across the page from right to left equals time." (Lucier 396-7)
